As thrilling as it is to drive a 2010 WRX STI, the engineers at Subaru must be the kind of guys that ride those insane high G force roller coasters over and over, because for 2011 they’ve fine-tuned the WRX STI to have even better grip, tighter steering, improved aerodynamics, and less body roll and understeer. The new 2011 Subaru WRX STI is, well, flat out fun.

For starters, the new STI has an overhauled suspension, with 16 percent stiffer springs compared to the 2010 STI Special Edition, and pillow-ball bushings in place of what used to be hard rubber pieces, making it easier to turn at a constant steering angle than with previous year models and reducing understeer as well. In the back the rear springs are 29 percent firmer than the ’10 STI SE. In order to reduce body roll the front and rear anti-roll bars were each given a little more thickness. On the test track these changes to the suspension are dramatically noticeable.

Under the hood the 2011 WRX STI remains the same, with a 305-hp turbocharged flat four tied to a 6 speed manual transmission. Drivers can fine-tune the throttle response with SI-Drive, and the advanced All-Wheel-Drive system’s multiple modes allows the driver to choose a center-differential locking level manually (or, of course, the car can do it by itself as well).

The 2011 STI also comes in a 4-door sedan as well as the 5-door hatchback body style. Both have some new exterior styling, with a more aggressive front end and a blacked out grille. On the inside the stereo sees an upgrade from last year’s model, with standard Bluetooth, auxiliary, and iPod/USB connectivity. Limited Models, available only in the sedan, have leather seats, a sunroof, foglight, and lightweight BBS Wheels.

Travis Pastrana, driving his modified Subaru Impreza, climbed Mount Washington in 6 minutes and 20.47 seconds, shattering the old record set in 1998 by 22 seconds. Pastrana, famous for being an extreme sports competitor and world-class rally car driver, averaged 72 miles per hour up the mountain. This was his first attempt at driving up Mount Washington and he plans to attempt to break his own record in June of next year during the Climb to the Clouds race.

Subaru, meanwhile, just released the specs behind the 2011 Impreza WRX. The Impreza WRX and WRX STI will see big improvements from their tamer brother’s 170 horsepower 2.5 liter engine. Both will feature a 2.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The WRX will have 265 horsepower while the STI’s advanced turbocharger will push out 305 horsepower.

Automatic transmission is not an option in this street-legal rally car. The WRX will come with a 5-speed manual and the STI will have an upgraded close-ratio 6-speed manual along with Brembo performance breaks. Both vehicles will have incline assist for smooth starts on hills. Tech savvy buyers of the WRX or STI will be pleased to see that Bluetooth connectivity, iPod controls, and a USB port come standard on all models.

Subaru will soon be releasing a new automatic braking technology to some of its’ vehicles, although which cars will get the safety feature isn’t yet available.

The safety mechanism, called New EyeSight, will work by using two front-facing cameras that will detect potential collisions and alert the driver with an audible warning. If no action is taken by the driver the car will apply the brakes itself in order to lessen the severity of the collision. If the car is traveling at 18.6 mph or less the car will be able to stop itself completely and avoid the accident altogether.

Also, thanks to the two cameras Subaru’s adaptive cruise control system will now be able to operate in the full speed range.

Three of the car brands that Reeves Import Motorcars carries – Volkswagen, Subaru, and BMW – won awards from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The Canadian International Auto Show was kicked off with the announcements of these awards as it does every year. The big prize, Automobile of the Year, went to the 2010 VW GTI.  The GTI beat out other models in styling, safety, value, merit and other factors to take home the award. The turbocharged hatchback is fuel efficient and has an upscale interior, along with several other features that set it apart.

The 2010 Subaru Outback was named the Utility Vehicle of the Year, honoring the redesigned model that has several improvements and a larger body than the old model. The Outback comes with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and comes with either a four or six cylinder engine. It also has great fuel economy, tons of safety features, and a flexible and roomy interior. The list of awards for the Outback keeps growing. The 2010 Subaru Outback was also named Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year and was given the highest possible safety rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

BMW’s new 335d Sedan was recognized as the best new design. This award is given out each year to the vehicle that best combines form and function. The 335d also has the recognition of being the most highly rated model in the luxury car segment and was the only diesel powered model in the category.

Just as Subaru came out with an excellent redesign in the 2010 Outback utility vehicle, the new 2010 Subaru Legacy is a remake that’s just as impressive. Subaru pulled out all of the stops and seems to have really focused on fixing all of the prior concerns drivers had with older models to make sure that this one is nothing short of exceptional. How exceptional? Consumer Reports went so far as to say “With its redesign, the Legacy goes from a decent but small family sedan to one in the top of its class”… now that’s exceptional.

The Subaru Legacy isn’t just another Camry or Accord. You really have to appreciate the all-wheel-drive, which is standard on all models and tailored to each engine-transmission combo. On top of that you get the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s seal of approval; the Legacy was designated as a “top safety pick” and received the highest safety ratings.

The redesigned Legacy is quite impressive, and there are several things that make it stand out. For starters, the new body style is one that you can look at and think to yourself “That is a really good looking car”. It’s also more powerful, with the turbo getting 265 hp. It also is more fuel efficient, getting up to 32 mpg on the highway. There is an improvement here as well in that the 6-cylinder now runs on regular fuel, as opposed to the previous model which took premium grade. On top of all of this the ’10 model also had 3 more inches of rear seat leg room.

The Legacy, which went on sale in June, comes with a 2.5i 4-cylinder, a 2.5GT turbocharged 4-cylinder, or a 3.6R 6-cylinder. No matter what, it’s hard to go wrong with the 2010 Legacy, or any other Subaru for that matter. Maybe that’s why they’re flying off of lots across the country!

In a year when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety bumped up the testing to the most rigorous and scrutinizing safety tests ever, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Audi were among few car manufacturers to receive the highest safety ratings possible.

This year’s safety tests not only included front, side, and rear collission tests but also a rollover test. Subaru was the only car manufacturer to receive the top safety rating for every crash test in each of the vehicle categories in which it competed. The list of vehicles to receive the top safety rating was only 27 cars long this year, compared to 90 last year.

Subaru’s models to make the list are:

• Subaru Legacy
• Subaru Impreza (except WRX)
• Subaru Tribeca
• Subaru Forester

Volkswagen’s cars to make the list were:

According to Edmunds Subaru’s version of the FT-86 will be quite different than Toyota’s. The FT-86 concept was revealed at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show. The project is a joint venture car between Subaru and Toyota. Subaru’s version will be priced about $5,000 more, around the $30,000 mark, and will compete with different cars than Toyota’s.

While both cars will feature the same 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine Subaru’s will boast about 50 more horsepower and will be about 250 hp total. It will also be all-wheel drive, instead of the rear-wheel drive of the FT-86. The wheelbase will also be longer. Both cars will be built by Subaru.

The Subaru Outback, a wagon version of the Subaru Legacy with slightly higher ground clearance, won Motor Trend’s annual SUV of the Year award.

As a through-and-through passenger car, the Outback impressed the magazine with its passenger car driving dynamics and gas mileage — 22 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway with the standard four-cylinder engine, better than any conventional gas-powered SUV on the market.

“The Outback shines with bona-fide SUV prowess and versatility. Yet it does so without typical SUV penalties,” Motor Trend wrote.

The Outback midsize station wagon starts at $22,995.

Subaru is opening up about its hybrid future.

This extraordinary gull wing-doored concept car will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in a few weeks’ time and it boasts not one, but three separate power sources.

Called the Hybrid Tourer Concept, it uses a 2.0-liter direct injection ‘Boxer’ engine – mounted under the bonnet and driving the front wheels through a fuel-efficient CVT transmission. Like the Toyota Prius, it gets assistance from a 10kW electric motor when extra power is needed.

A second electric motor sends 20kW of power to the rear wheels – but only at low-speeds and when maximum acceleration is required. The system also has a generator which charges  a set of lithium-ion batteries.

The layout is very compact and with no rear drive shafts, Subaru has maximized rear seat space. In addition to those gull wing doors, the dashboard also moves up and down to give the driver an excellent view ahead.

Through the 1970’s and 80’s, Subaru had earned a reputation for building rugged, reliable, and lovably quirky cars. The availability of all-wheel drive made the cars especially popular in snowy climates. Subaru basically had one car, available in several styles: four door sedan, two door coupe, two door hatchback, four door wagon and the Brat pick-up.

When the XT went on sale in 1985, it was unlike any Subaru. A low, wedge-shaped body with an airy cabin boasted impressive aerodynamics. Interesting features like flush-mount door handles, a single windshield wiper, a unique cockpit inspired interior, pistol-grip shifter, and a pneumatic suspension with adjustable height further set the XT apart.

Over a seven year run, total production was just under 99,000 cars. In 1992, the XT was replaced by the larger, more sophisticated, but still unique SVX.
