The Boxter may be fitted with Porsche's future 4 cylinder turbo engine.

The new boxer engine will displace 2.5 liters and produce up to 360 horsepower – a step up from the current Boxster engine, which produces between 255 and 320 horsepower depending on the trim. The Boxster, Cayman, and possibly even future 911 models (although Durheimer told Autocar they plan on keeping the flat six in 911s) may end up being equipped with the engine. More exciting, though, is the possibility of this engine being used in a new small Porsche roadster, which could fit in just under the Boxster price range. The auto world has been awaiting the introduction of said roadster, which shares many parts with the VW Bluesport Concept as well as a sister model from Audi. The engine, however, will most likely be Porsche’s own, and could very well be this new turbocharged four cylinder.

It’s not often a car becomes a collector’s item as soon as it rolls out of production. It’s also not often that we see a car that has been perfected beyond perfection. Porsche has come out with their most powerful street car ever – the king of the 997-generation of 911′s – the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. It completes a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes, 18 seconds – faster than pretty much every other production car.  It accelerates from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds, and to 124 miles per hour in 9.8 seconds, a full second faster than the Turbo S. In under 29 seconds you’ll be traveling at 186 miles per hour. And, on top of the mind-blowing speed, this Porsche gets almost 20 miles per gallon. All of this is possible thanks to an increase to 620 horsepower and a reduction in weight to 3,050 pounds (425 pounds lighter than the 911 Turbo S).

The 911 GT2 RS is the last of the Porsche to receive the 3.6 liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with 516 lb-ft of torque. Also, all of the power is sent to the rear wheels and the transmission is a 6 speed manual – Porsche’s other most recent supercars have had all-wheel drive and the PDK dual-clutch transmission, however this would have needlessly negated much of the weight reduction in the GT2 RS had it been included. Throw in a top-of-the-line braking system and Porsche’s world-class handling and you’ve got yourself a car that will draw plenty of stares but not many competitors. Car and Driver has called the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS “epic” and “a wicked, $250,000 high-five”. We’ll have to agree. You’ll just have to hope that you’re lucky enough to own a piece of automotive history – the crowning piece to the legendary 997 generation.

According to USA Today’s auto blog Porsche has begun the search for the United States’ oldest Porsche in 12 different model classes. The search, called the My Classic Porsche Search, is part of Porsche’s celebration of 60 years in the United States.

Winning entries, likely to come from owners with plenty of documentation, will receive special recognition and will also be eligible for other awards from Porsche including an exclusive badge from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

Porsche aficionados who don’t happen to own some of the oldest in America can enter into another contest being held by the automaker, the national My Porsche Passion Contest. The contest will be unveiled on August 24th and will give people a chance to write a a story, in 500 words or fewer, that exemplifies their unique passion for a specific Porsche car, an experience or the brand as a whole. The essay contest will be open to entries until Nov. 1.

Porsche released some very exciting news today. It’s official – that super sexy, super efficient electric supercar that we first drooled over earlier this year, the Porsche 918 Spyder, will be put into limited production! We first told you about the 918 Spyder Hybrid back in March. It started out as just a concept car, but then interest in the engineering marvel accelerated almost as fast as the car itself (which, by the way, is 0 from 60 mph in 3.2 seconds).

The 918 Spyder gets an astounding 94 miles per gallon and has four different driving modes ranging from all electric, called E-Drive, to the performance tuned Race Hybrid mode. It’s 3.4 liter mid-mounted V8 engine produces 500 horsepower while 2 other electric motors give it an extra 218 horsepower.

While Porsche has yet to say how many of the dream machine will bill produced, it’s likely that the number will be about the same as the Carrera GT – somewhere around 1,500. The 918 Spyder will also be Porsche’s most expensive car, set to carry a price tag of $630,000.

The news of the 918 Spyder wasn’t the only big announcement by Porsche today. Buried under the excitement about the supercar we learned that Porsche also has confirmed that they will launch a Panamera S Hybrid in 2011. It will share the same hybrid parts as the Cayenne S Hybrid. It will be powered by a 329 horsepower 3 liter V6 engine along with a 46 hp electric motor. It will also be able to drive at low speeds on electric power alone.

It’s really remarkable that Porsche is becoming a leader in fuel efficient vehicles, all while keeping their image as a performance-first manufacturer.

It’s clear that the car in the sketch isn’t something in the current Porsche line-up, and the long, sloped hood looks similar to that on the Panamera, which has surpassed sales expectations to this point. The cars proportions seem to suggest a front-engine GT rather than a revised mid-engine or rear-engine sports car. It’s rumored that if this car is built and put into production that it could bare the 928 name, a ressurection of a car that we havn’t seen since 1995.

Although none of this is confirmed by Porsche, we would certainly love to see a new V8 Porsche!

I just finished reading an article by Tom Jensen, the Editor and Chief of SPEEDtv.com, and I must say it’s been a while since I’ve heard an argument for a great car as convincing as his for the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. To summarize his thoughts in one concise quote “The 2010 Porsche Turbo Cabriolet is the single best automobile I’ve ever driven in my lifetime and likely ever will.” This statement is coming from a lifelong car enthusiast who has driven everything from Geo Metros to Ferraris for a quarter of a century.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Jensen says, beats out every other car because, unlike everything else, it is flawless. It has a 500 horsepower engine that will get you to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and a has a top speed of 194mph. It handles “like a slot car”. Yet is also gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway. It has timeless exterior design that will make you stare, and a roomy, comfortable, dare I say perfect interior as well (Tom Jensen, a 6 foot 4 inch man who admitted to being “not at all thin”, says it’s got all the room he could possibly need). Plus, thanks to the PDK 7-speed dual clutch transmission you can choose to drive the car in automatic or in manual.

Porsche has created the ultimate car: one that has limits that surpass those of the driver. This is one high performance automobile that can be driven every day and leave you satisfied every time.

When you hear the word hybrid certain thing always seem to come to mind: The Toyota Prius, grassy hills, hippies. On the other hand, some things usually never come to mind when you hear the word: Performance, supercar, racing. There are people at Porsche, however, that would argue all of that is about to change. Or, it might have already.

Intent on keeping the dream of performance alive in a world suddenly overtaken by concerns with efficiency the dreamers and engineers at Porsche have put everything they have into building the performance cars of the future.

Just a few months ago at the Geneva Motor Show they unveiled the 918 Spyder – a real hybrid supercar. Porsche surreptitiously built the car and they nearly stopped the entire car show when they pulled the cover off of it. The stunning supercar of the future grabbed the attention of every person in the building. Many people gazed in amazement at the concept car, but there probably weren’t many that believed the car could ever go into production. The plug-in 918 Spyder, which can run entirely on electricity up to 25km, has over 500 horsepower and reaches 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, a feat not reached by the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo or the Ferrari Enzo (neither of which can be plugged into your wall). Making this vehicle even more exciting is the possibility that it could be on the road in the next few years. The big boss at Porsche, Michael Macht, told Autocar “There is no one inside Porsche who doesn’t want to build the 918. The response has been marvelous; we will ask buyers to sign letters of intent.”

The 918 Spyder may or may not hit showroom floors, but building a super-efficient supercar isn’t the main goal of the guys at Porsche. They are focused on changing the entire industry. They want to show the world that hybrids can do anything. They are building tomorrow’s performance vehicles to satisfy the ever-hungry minds of car enthusiasts. That’s why Porsche also built the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, a high-performance race car that just took 3rd place at the Nurburgring Long Distance Championship. The hybrid needed one fewer pit stop than the rest of the cars on the track.

Explaining all of the technical details of how these amazing machines work would take forever, but luckily the kind people at Porsche put together a 12 minute video to do just that.

Just look at it. It’s beautiful. Sure, you can say the wheels look too much like science fiction… but this is a concept car – it’s supposed to push the limits of reality. This Porsche certainly does just that.

The jaw-dropping, stunning Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid – that’s right, hybrid – has a whopping 500 horsepower that propels the car from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds. That’s faster than the 750 hp Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, the 806 hp Koenigsegg CCX, the 627 hp McLaren F1, the 660 hp Ferrari Enzo… you get the picture. It also has a top speed of 198 mph.

What makes it even more amazing isn’t the speed, but something you normally don’t think about when you think Porsche: this thing gets 78.4 miles per gallon. Was that your jaw that just dropped and hit the ground? Don’t worry it happened to me, too.

Lets take a closer look at Porsche’s latest masterpiece. The 918 Spyder Hybrid, based on the 911 GT3 R, is a plug-in supercar. It is powered by a mid-engine V8 and two electric motors. The power for the motors is stored in a lithium-ion battery behind the seats. The electric motors, situated at the front and back of the car, combine for 218 horsepower. All those horses reach the ground through a seven-speed PDK gearbox.

Porsche has given the Spyder four driving modes. If you don’t need to go further than 16 miles and can spare a few seconds on that zero to sixty time then turn on the E-Drive (all electric) mode. Choose Hybrid mode and the power will come from both the lithium-ion batteries and the gas tank. Sport Hybrid mode adds a little more umph and uses a bit more gas. Feeling like tearing up the road? Flip the car into Race Hybrid mode and everything will be tuned for maximum performance. Push a button and the electric motors can be used to give you an extra burst of speed.

Porsche made sure they kept things as light as possible by using a ton of carbon-composite materials, magnesium and aluminum. The final weight is 3,285 pounds.

Porsche revealed the final specifications of the 2011 Cayenne during a private event in Germany last month. The Cayenne will be offered with plenty of engine options. Choose from an entry-level 3.6-liter V-6 with 300-horsepower, a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8 with 400-horsepower or a range-topping twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V-8 with 500-horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission will come standard.

The new Porsche SUV will also be more fuel efficient, about 23% more efficient to be exact. That is thanks in part to a drop in weight. A 10% lighter Cayenne will allow for greater performance as well.

If you want the luxury of a sport utility vehicle and the performance of a Porsche the second-generation Cayenne is a perfect fit that wont empty your wallet at the gas pumps.

The new Porsche Boxter Spyder was revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show and boy did it make an entrance. The white body and black wheels rolled through a wall of fog and showed its distinct Porsche face, bringing Porsche enthusiasts and purists to their feet.

The Boxter Spyder draws a lot from classic models such as the 550 Spyder and the RS 60. And, like many Porsches, this one is built for hard-core driving. It is a minimalist machine with speed in mind, with all four 19″ wheels weighing just 86 pounds and a roof that weighs just 13 pounds. The lightest Porsche in the lineup (2,811 pounds) is powered by a 320 horsepower 3.4-liter 6-cylinder engine with 273 foot-pounds of torque. The power-to-weight ratio is 8.77 pounds per horsepower, better than the 911 Carerra S. That power is enough to propel the alluminum and carbon fiber Boxter Spyder to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and to a top speed of 166 mph.A 7-speed PDK double-clutch gearbox and a 6-speed manual are the transmission options available.

The Porsche Boxter Spyder should hit showrooms by February.
