The people at Land Rover have been working hard leading up to the 2011 Geneva Auto Show in preparation for the unveiling of several exciting new models which will fit in all over their already impressive line-up.

The biggest news will be Land Rover’s new Range Rover_e, an electric plug-in hybrid prototype which can travel up to 20 miles on batteries alone. After that, the 3.0 liter TDV6 diesel engine has an amazing range of 671 miles per tank. It even has a top speed of 120 miles per hour while emitting only 89 grams of CO2 per kilometer, just 2 grams more than the puny Smart fortwo Cabrio.

Besides the new electric hybrid, Land Rover plans to also show off their new Discovery 4 Limited Edition with Black and White themes and the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, the company’s most expensive and most luxurious Range Rover ever.

Perhaps the most anticipated new model will be the Evoque. Land Rover will unveil the new model in both the coupe and 5-door variants, complete with all of their customizable options. The company stated that they want owners of the Evoque to be able to make their own unique statement with plenty of personalized options available.

Since we know just how incredible the Land Rover LR4 is, it came as no surprise to us that the 2011 LR4 HSE has been crowned champion of the coveted 4×4 of the Year award given out by Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine.  This is the 1st time a Land Rover has won the award in the 29th year of the competition.

In order to claim victory the LR4 had to beat out the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford F-150 Raptor SVT, and Lexus GX 460 Premium in a 1,000 mile trial that evaluated each vehicle’s suspension, engine, transmission, and transfer case along with style and creature comforts. In the end, the LR4 was the undisputed champion, with one judge saying “Surprising, nay, shocking capabilities both on-road and off. And comfortable too!”

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine has named the 2011 Land Rover LR4 HSE the winner of its coveted 4×4 of the Year award. This is the 29th year of the enthusiast magazine’s in-depth competition of new 4×4 vehicles, and the first time a Land Rover product has taken home the award.

The Land Rover LR4 HSE topped the field of four worthy competitors and ranked high in every category of this year’s in-depth test. The grueling 1,000-mile trial evaluates each vehicle’s suspension, engine, transmission, and transfer case along with the style and creature comforts the vehicle provides. Most importantly, the 4x4s are judged heavily on how well they perform off-road. This year’s competitors also included the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford F-150 Raptor SVT, and Lexus GX 460 Premium.

“The Land Rover LR4 HSE pulled ahead of the fierce competition in this year’s test and came out an undisputed champion,” said Rick Pewe, editor-in-chief of Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road. “The off-road capability of the LR4 was remarkable, and the on-road manners were superb. It impressed every judge in the test.” As one judge noted, “Surprising, nay, shocking capabilities both on-road and off. And comfortable too! Like a true English gentleman, it doesn’t get ruffled.”

“At Land Rover we invest a tremendous amount of engineering resources and automotive technology into our vehicles to ensure we remain the most capable luxury vehicles in the world, and that capability includes being able to tackle the most severe off-road conditions imaginable,” said Land Rover North America Executive Vice President Chris Marchand. “We appreciate the experts at Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine taking these vehicles to their limits and reporting back that the Land Rover LR4 is in fact, in their words, an undisputed champion.”

To be eligible to compete, a vehicle must be all-new or have improvements that make it perform significantly different from the previous model year. Vehicles must also be available for sale before January 15 of the model year, have a production run of at least 2,500 units, and be equipped with a two-speed transfer case. The complete test results and vehicle evaluations for the 2011 4×4 of the Year competition will appear in the February 2011 issue, available December 7, 2010.

Land Rover just released an upgraded Range Rover in 2010, and now only a year later the model line is getting even more enhancements. One of the new improvements to the Range Rover is an addition to a system put in place in the 2010, the Terrain Response System. Hill start assist holds the vehicle on a grade until the driver accelerates, making it easier to drive up hills. Last year Land Rover added a new launch control system designed for driving in sand as well as an updated rock climbing and decent mode and a gradient release control to keep the Range Rover from accelerating too quickly down a slope.

Other additions to the 2011 model are optional rear reclining seats and a 1200-watt 19 speaker Harmon/Kardnon sound system.

A new Autobiography Black limited edition model is also being released to celebrate 40 years of Land Rover. It comes with the rear reclining seats standard along with heat and ventilation in the rear seats. The interior can be covered in Jet Black leather or two-toned leather. Also included is Grand Black wood veneer trim and illuminated door sills. The exterior is, of course, a special Barolo black color with contrasting diamond-turned aluminum alloy wheels and a few nice chrome inserts and a special grille.

All of the 2011 Range Rover models will utilize a 6-speed automatic transmission and your choice of either a normally aspirated V8, producing 375 horsepower, or supercharged 5.0 liter V8, producing 510 horsepower.

Land Rover said that it would build a production version of the Land Rover LRX concept shown at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new car will join the 2011 Range Rover lineup next year.

The vehicle, which has not been named, will be designed, engineered and built in England and will be sold in more than 100 countries. Land Rover said the vehicle would be the smallest and lightest the company had produced.

The LRX concept was 5.9 inches shorter than the current LR2 and 8.1 inches lower.

Land Rover said the new model would be true to the LRX concept and would have many Range Rover design cues, including the clamshell hood.

More details will be released next year.

Land Rover says it has no intention of going soft.

The British company, one of the pioneers of the four-wheel-drive phenomenon, says it won’t build a less capable, more car-like offroader, despite the popularity of the formula worldwide.

Genuine, purpose-built off-roaders face dwindling demand and growing criticism from environmental groups, but Land Rover says it will stick with its 60-year-old formula of developing go-anywhere 4WDs with hardcore off-road technology.

Range Rover brand manager Andy Goy says genuine off-road ability is a key attraction of the brand.

The vehicle in question is the new Range Rover LRX, and Autocar in the U.K. is reporting that the small Rover will see its debut on June 17, 2010 with the first production models rolling down the line in early 2011. Styling both inside and out is expected to stay very close to the well-received LRX concept from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

Based on underpinnings shared with the Freelander (that’s the LR2 here in the States), the LRX could feature a transverse engine driving the front wheels with the first application of the marque’s e TERRAIN electric drive rear axle, a setup that is said to be capable of powering the rear wheels using battery power only at speeds up to 20 mph.

And now we have another brand to add to the “green” list.  Tata Motors have announced in their annual report that their recently acquired Jaguar and Land Rover brands have made the progressive move to go all-aluminum.

“JLR is planning to have all its future cars constructed with light weight aluminum bodies resulting in considerable savings in weight, and reduction in CO2 emissions,” Tata said in the company’s annual report.

There are many benefits to aluminum bodies besides environmental-friendliness; improved vehicle performance and better fuel economy are all included in the package.  With stricter emissions and fuel economy regulations looming on the horizon, JLR’s new owners quickly moved aluminum body construction to the top of its list.

In addition to reduced emissions and great fuel economy, the switch to aluminum bodies will also create stiffer vehicles, resulting in better overall performance. Aluminum bodyconstruction requires fewer parts and joints that its steel counterpart, improving crash worthiness and overall road manners.
