The BMW 5 Series is Back and Better Than Ever

BMW is a perennial leader and benchmark in the automotive industry and the new 6th generation 5 Series is a great example why. BMW took a car that was already riding among the best and made it even better.

The new 2011 5 Series, which debuted earlier this month at the New York International Auto Show, makes up for the shortfalls that the previous generation of the model had (not that there were many to begin with) by providing the same sportiness and flair as the 3 Series while having about the same amount of interior room as the last generation 7 Series. Even the formerly cramped rear-seat has gained legroom.

Under the hood of the 2011 535i you will find a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. In the 550i you’ll find a beastly twin-turbo V8. Even the yet to be released entry-level 528i provides plenty of power with its non-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine.

All of that power doesn’t mean you’ll be spending more time at the gas station. The bright minds at BMW are continually finding ways to save fuel, like by using battery regeneration, automatic stop-start technology (even though it isn’t a hybrid) and the precise 8-speed automatic transmission.

To make things even more enjoyable BMW has added a lot of the technology from the old 7-Series to the new 5 Series. It now comes with a head-up display, active cruise control, blind spot detection, night vision – yes night vision – with pedestrian detection, surround-view camera vision, and active-suspension controls. On top of all of this, the car can literally park itself into any space that’s just 4 feet longer than itself. That’s quite the car! But, then again what else would you expect from one of the biggest players in the car world?
