Volkswagen and Stanford University have teamed up to build a Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab (VAIL) on campus as part of the school of engineering. The collaboration between science and industry will help to continue VW’s drive towards newer, better technologies.

The 750 square meter facility, which is being inaugarated this weekend, will include space for research teams from the fields of mechanical engineering, electronics and information technology, as well as a fully equipped workshop area. There will even be a vehicle proving ground. In addition to the $2 Million that Volkswagen has already contributed to the contruction of the facility, VW will also be giving $750,000 per year to Stanford’s CarLab over the next five years. That facility is also new.

The focus of VAIL’s research will be on creating innovative technologies to improve mobility, vehicle safety and environmental protection.
