Looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle but skeptical of hybrids? Check out Volkswagen’s diesel-powered Jetta TDI sedan, which is the most attractive alternative to gasoline/electric-powered models such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. The ’09 Jetta TDI meets emission standards in all 50 states, something previous models had trouble doing, and is quicker, sportier, and handles better than most hybrids. There’s also a family-friendly SportWagen Jetta TDI that’s as versatile as a small SUV or crossover vehicle. The Jetta TDI can’t compete with a hybrid’s in-city mileage but is rated at up to 41 mpg on the highway, and owners often report getting well over 50 mpg. With a base price of about $23,000, the Jetta TDI sedan is price-competitive with the Prius and Insight and only costs about $2,000 more than a comparable gasoline-powered Jetta. It also qualifies for a $1,300 federal tax credit, which neither the Toyota and Honda hybrids nor the gasoline-powered Jetta do.
